EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) governs how refrigerants are handled in stationary equipment — your walk-ins, reach-ins, ice machines, and refrigerated prep tables. As an operator you don't take a test, but you're responsible for making sure the people who service your refrigeration are certified, and for meeting the rules on leaks and recovery. Anyone who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerant must hold the right 608 certification, earned by passing an EPA-approved exam. There are four types:

The certification does not expire. As an operator, it's fair to ask a service tech to show their 608 card — a legitimate refrigeration contractor will have it.
For appliances with a large refrigerant charge (the 50-lb threshold under 608), the rules set annual leak rate limits. Exceed the rate and you must repair the leak (and verify the repair) within set timeframes. The trigger rates depend on the equipment class:

So a walk-in or large refrigeration rack (commercial refrigeration) that leaks more than 20% of its charge per year triggers a required repair. The AIM Act extended similar leak-management ideas to HFC systems at a lower charge threshold — another reason to keep good service records.
Two other 608 basics matter to operators. First, venting refrigerant is illegal — techs must recover it into approved equipment during service and disposal. Second, keep service records: dates, refrigerant type and amount added, leak inspections, and repairs. For larger systems these records are effectively required, and for all systems they're your proof of compliance and a useful maintenance history. When you dispose of old refrigeration, refrigerant must be recovered by a certified tech before the unit is scrapped.
You don't need a 608 card, but you're on the hook for compliance. A few habits keep you clear:
