ENERGY STAR is a government-backed efficiency certification. For commercial kitchens it identifies equipment that meets defined energy-performance levels — certified models do the same cooking or cooling job while using measurably less energy and, for water-using equipment, less water. It is not a quality or durability rating; it is an efficiency label. The value for an operator is lower utility bills over a long equipment life, sometimes sweetened by a rebate.
ENERGY STAR certifies several commercial food-service categories. If a piece of equipment is not in a covered category, there simply is not an ENERGY STAR version to look for.
Certified commercial equipment generally uses on the order of 10–30% less energy than standard models, and the dollar savings depend heavily on how continuously the unit runs and your utility rates. Equipment that runs around the clock — refrigeration and ice — tends to deliver the fastest payback, while high-fuel appliances like gas fryers can show large annual dollar savings simply because they burn so much energy to begin with.

Many utilities and states offer rebates on ENERGY STAR commercial kitchen equipment, and they vary widely — from small amounts to several thousand dollars per qualifying unit depending on the category, your provider, and your location.
